Waihi Community Church

Our Region

We are located in the beautiful Hauraki district and New Zealand’s heart of gold.  With the Karangahake Gorge, famous rail trails and gold mining attractions  and of course awesome Waihi Beach, Waihi is a truly beautiful town with the best of all worlds. Along with the natural beauty it’s also no more than an hour and a half’s drive from the big three; Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland.  We are thankful God has placed us here in this beautiful and strategic location to fulfill the great commission Jesus gave us before he ascended to heaven.  Our prayer is that others will find the beauty of Jesus, which far surpasses the beauty of nature, in our church family as they meet and spend time with us.

Our History

front of waihi community church buildingEvery family needs a house to live in, and Waihi Community Church is blessed to have a lovely building to facilitate all the family stuff that you’ll find on the church life page.

We are also blessed to have a wonderful heritage of revival associated with the building. It originally was the Methodist church, and in 1905 a Dr. and Mrs. Watson came from America to minister to the Methodist people here.  During that trip, God visited the town and many people turned to Jesus.  There were children’s meetings where scores of children between 13 and 16 years old came to faith in Jesus Christ.  Soon the meetings moved to the miners’ hall where over 500 people came to worship God and spend time in his presence.  Those who couldn’t get inside the hall waited outside to take the place of anyone who had to leave.  There were open air gatherings and multiple meetings at various churches during the week.  This event was so significant that news of it spread to the South Island, and an eyewitness account of it was printed in the Nelson Mail.  That article can be found on the New Zealand National Library website for anyone to read, thus cementing the revival’s significance for years to come.

It is our heart’s desire that God would visit us with his holy presence again and that many people will again turn to Jesus.  It would be a great blessing and humble privilege to be a part of such an event.
